The Corporation of the Fine Arts Museums is seeking a Senior Museum Technician for Works on Paper. Under the supervision of the Director of Preparation and Installation, with direction from print and drawing curators and technical input from paper conservators, the Senior Museum Technician for Works on Paper handles the day-to-day matting and framing operation for the museums. This role conducts all preparation of prints, drawings, photographs, and books for two museums which host approximately 16-24 exhibitions per year containing works on paper and house a permanent collection of close to 100,000 prints, drawings, photographs, and books. Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Prepare works on paper for several dozen exhibitions per year. Unframe, folder, and return to storage upon exhibition end.
   
2. Prepare up to 100 works or more per year for loan. Unframe, folder and return to storage upon return from loan.
   
3. Mat and frame permanent collection artworks designated for classes, etc.
   
4. In consultation with curators and conservators, determine style/size for frames.
   
5. Order appropriate frames and maintain inventory of frames and related supplies; maintain frame database and inventory.

1. Maintain workspace; organize matting area and lock-up supply storage.
   
2. Organizes, cleans, maintains storage for frames.

1. Install works on paper and photographs.
   
2. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience: Requires completion of high school, supplemented by four years of progressively responsible experience in museum matting and framing; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

• Wide knowledge of historical and current practices of matting and framing.
• Ability to perform a wide variety of matting, framing, and installation procedures with manual dexterity and sensitivity to materials.
• Understanding of the variety of tools and supplies necessary to complete a breadth of matting and framing techniques.
• Ability to develop innovative solutions for the installation of new and challenging media.
• Experience in storage solutions.
• Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects in a highly demanding and fast paced work environment.
• Experience in handling valuable works of art with extreme care essential; work from drawings and ability to follow oral instructions as to construction and installation of museum exhibits.
• Familiarity with museum conservation practices, issues of installation techniques and design.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time and have the ability to lift 75 pounds.

Additional:

Schedule: This position works onsite at the Legion of Honor. The workweek is Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, with the understanding that schedules may change based on operational needs.

This is a union position eligible for the Museums' benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance and a generous time off package.

There is a 7-step union pay scale for this position: Step 1 (starting rate) is $35.13 per hour, Step 7 (max rate) is $47.08. Generally, new employees start at the beginning of the pay scale.
